国際的な授業の質を見つめながら―Stare at the international class.英語実習1LR国際戦略推進機構 基盤教育部門 英語教育部 渡辺 雅仁教授English Exercise 1LR (Listening & Reading)Taught by Prof. Masahito WatanabeIn December 2014, Prof. Masahito Watanabe held an open lecture during his English Exercise 1LR (Listening & Reading) class for rst-year students. The class transitioned through several activities, including a review of grammar practice exercises assigned in the previous lesson, through the introduction of new material, and later a quiz to check mastery of the points. The organization was very familiar to the students, who transitioned seamlessly from checking homework to doing group work, and later, to focusing their attention on a lecture which introduced the day’s new points. The students were very much at ease interacting with the teacher and with each other. The way in which students consulted with both the teacher and their classmates about various grammar points without hesitation made it clear that the students were comfortable seeking any help they might need.Observers of the class were interested in two aspects of the class in particular. First was the “small class” atmosphere, despite an enrollment of more than 40 students. The teacher knew every student by name and was clearly familiar with each one’s individual needs. He gave personalized advice to students and the students were relaxed and not at all self-conscious, even when unsure of the correct answer. The second point worth special note was the extremely smooth use of information technology during the class. This lesson’s listening activity took up a conversation between two students in the U.S. discussing an aspect of college life. When it became clear that some students were unfamiliar with one of the topics of the conversation, the teacher immediately turned and conducted an Internet search for photographs, displaying the search results in real time to the class on a large screen. In this way, the class provided an excellent opportunity for observers to reect upon the class atmosphere they create in their own courses, as well as how they might incorporate technology to enhance students’ understanding of class topics.6
