中国語実習2a 国際戦略推進機構 基盤教育部門 初修外国語教育部新沼 雅代准教授Chinese Exercise 2aTaught by Assoc. Prof. Masayo NiinumaIn January 2015, Assoc. Prof. Masayo Niinuma opened her Chinese Exercise 2a class to observation by the YNU community. It was the nal class of the term, enabling the observers to see for themselves the progress of the students over the academic year. The class began with a review of grammar, which was followed by pairwork in which students took the roles of shoppers and store clerks. The students asked directions, conrmed prices, and answered survey questions about their “shopping experi-ence.” In this way they were able to review a wide variety of expressions that had been covered throughout the course. The teacher also invited a YNU graduate student who is a native speaker of Chinese to interact with the students during the second half of the class. Each student was able to ask the visiting native Chinese speaker at least one question about her daily life̶“Are you busy recently?” “What is your favorite food?” “Have you ever been to Tokyo Tower?”̶and many students grinned from ear to ear when this visiting teacher understood their pronunciation and grammar and responded to them. The comprehensive review of a wide variety of expressions followed by this interaction with a native speaker gave the students an excellent opportunity to realize for themselves how much they had mastered over their 10 months of study. The class ended with some advice from both the native-speaking visitor and the teacher about how to study in the future, including tips on improving pronunciation, especially tones, and how to increase exposure to authentic input. Reecting on the class, Assoc. Prof. Niinuma commented, “The opportunity to interact with a native speaker increases learners’ motivation. I also want them to approach language without being afraid of making mistakes.” YNU AP/FD NEWS Letter7
